About
Why SpokenText exists
SpokenText was created to make reading feel audio native. Most reading apps begin with a visual, text-first interface and add audio afterward. This app begins with sound.
It offers an audio-first experience for people who want to listen, while also providing a text-first interface for people who prefer to read visually. Both experiences are powered by the same responsive audio system, so each receives the benefits of smooth, high-quality spoken playback.
Instead of requiring prerecorded audio, SpokenText creates audio as you read from a rolling buffer. This was technically complex to achieve, but it makes an audio-native experience possible without waiting for an audiobook to be prepared.
The app was built by a product manager and designer in Ottawa whose master's thesis work helped shape its next stage. His experience using VoiceOver also informs how SpokenText is designed, but the goal is broader: a better audio-native reader for anyone who wants one.
